Understanding Prescription Drug Abuse

Nonmedical abuse of prescription drugs is a major public health problem in America. An estimated 52 million have reportedly used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons at least once. Many of these people are young, but it’s also a major issue among older people.

Any time a prescribed medicine is used without a prescription or in any way other than how a medical provider intends, it’s considered abuse.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s data from 2021 among people 12 or older:

  • 14.3 million people reported misusing any psychotherapeutic prescription drug in the past 12 months.
  • Around 3.9 million individuals reported the misuse of benzodiazepines.
  • 8.7 million said they’d misused prescription pain medicines in the past year.
  • Around 5% of 12th graders reported misuse of any prescription drug over the past 12 months.
  • About 1.5 million have a prescription stimulant disorder.
  • It’s estimated that 2.2 million people have an addiction to a prescription sedative or tranquilizer.
  • About 5 million people have a prescription opioid use disorder.

We work to provide life-saving care at our New Jersey prescription drug rehab center, so reach out to learn more about how we can help.

  • Opioids: These are pain relieving medicines like the brand name drugs Vicodin, OxyContin, and Percocet. When someone uses prescription opioids, they reduce pain signals that reach the brain. They impact the parts of the brain that affect emotion. Prescription pain relievers can create a euphoric high or sense of pleasant relaxation, triggering the brain's reward response. When the reward response is activated, it plays a role in the development of an addiction.
  • Benzodiazepines: Commonly prescribed benzodiazepines include Valium and Xanax. These are central nervous system depressants for treating panic attacks, anxiety, and sleep disorders. They aren't meant for long-term use because of the risk of dependence and addiction.
  • Sleep medications: Non-benzodiazepine sleep medicines are also central nervous system depressants, and they have a risk of dependence. These medications include the brand names Ambien, Lunesta, and Sonata. Their chemical structure differs from benzodiazepines, but they act on similar receptors in the brain.
  • Stimulants: These drugs increase attention, energy levels, and alertness. They can create euphoria and self-confidence. They are often used to enhance performance at school, work, or even in athletic situations. Adderall is a frequently abused prescription stimulant.

At our prescription drug treatment center in New Jersey, our programs are available on a flexible but effective outpatient basis to help anyone overcome prescription drug addiction.

We do not offer detoxification or inpatient treatment at our location, however, we can assist clients who need higher levels of care in finding the treatment options that best meet their individual needs.

The Risks of Prescription Drug Abuse

The risks of abusing prescribed medicines can be just as significant as illegal drugs. Unfortunately, there’s often a misconception that it’s safe because it comes from a doctor.

The opioid epidemic has taught us that’s entirely untrue.

There are many risks of abusing prescription drugs, including the potential to overdose. Opioid overdoses are incredibly common because these drugs slow down your central nervous system function. If it slows too much because you took more than your body can handle, it can affect your breathing and heart rate, ultimately leading to an overdose, coma, or death.

Benzodiazepines and other CNS depressants are less likely to lead to an overdose than opioids unless they’re combined with other substances. For example, it’s common to combine benzodiazepines with alcohol or opioids, and that greatly raises the risk of complications and overdoses.

Stimulants can cause mental and physical health problems, including complications related to your heart.

Consider a prescription drug rehab center in New Jersey to avoid these risks. We can help you every step of the way, whether the treatment is for you or someone you care about.
